Nose first, heart second, ears last
The Beagle was shaped as a smaller pack hound for hare and rabbit, trading sheer size for stamina and close scent work. Its reconstructed line draws on Talbot and Southern Hound stock with a little Greyhound influence. It survives as a modern breed and also contributed to later terrier and hunt-dog lines.
