The modern Bulldog was developed from the older bull-baiting dog after blood sports declined, gradually becoming heavier, shorter and more companion-oriented. Its reconstructed ancestry combines Old English Bulldog, Mastiff and Pug influence. It later contributed to Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier and related branches.
