The Pembroke retained the Welsh cattle-dog job while developing a slightly different type from the Cardigan. Its reconstructed ancestry combines spitz-type influence, Cardigan stock and Welsh herding dogs. The breed survives today, though its public image is now far more companion than cattle worker.
