The Irish Setter was refined from older Irish setting dogs into a fast, stylish red gundog for locating game birds. Its reconstructed ancestry combines English Setter, Irish Water Spaniel, Gordon Setter and Pointer influence. It later contributed to the Golden Retriever line while surviving as a distinct breed.
