The modern Mastiff is the later standardised form of Britain's much older heavy guard and holding-dog tradition. Its reconstructed ancestry combines ancient molosser-type dogs with old British bandog stock. The line also feeds Bulldogs, Bull Terriers and several later bull-and-terrier branches.
